I have an idea about the vetoed Harvey Milk Day here in California. Our legislature passed a bill to have May 22 Harvey Milk Day, in honor of the first openly gay elected public official in the US. Governor Schwartzenegger, bowing to the same people who took away our marriage rights in this state, chose to veto the bill, on Sept 30th--just a few days before the election and it's aftermath that was so public.

This veto was ignored and I think we should step forward and be counted, please act:

As it is, all these presidential candidates (Obama included) have stated that it is an issue of the state. We can see here in California that many people cannot separate their religious ideas from legal policy. We must attack the notion from that point. It must be on the federal agenda from the equal protection and separation of church and state points of view--it is a civil rights issue that must be addressed at the federal level. This is the time. Especially with a Democratic Congress. We have to force them to deal with the issue at a national level, once and forever.

You probably saw the news coverage of Governor Romney's anti-marriage rally on the steps of the State House a few weeks ago following the legislature's vote to recess the Constitutional Convention until January 2nd. While it is obvious to almost everyone that the lame-duck governor was grandstanding for the sake of his presidential aspirations, several hundred opponents of equality turned out for the event. Yet, with little publicity or advance notice on our side, supporters of equality came out in full force to counter their message of discrimination. Now we need your help once again.

This Saturday, anti-marriage advocates are planning a rally at 1:30 PM outside the Barnstable County Courthouse. Local activists are organizing a group of marriage equality supporters to gather at the Courthouse at that time. Please join us and show your support for equality to ensure that the only messages heard on that day are not our opponents' mean-spirited attacks on same-sex couples and their families.
For more information, email Len Stewart at LenStewart2001@yahoo.com

Bring your homemade sign in support of equality and the 109 legislators who took a stand against discrimination. The event will not last long, so please take an hour or two out of your day and stand up to those who oppose equal rights. Please come out and show your support for equality!

Although 109 legislators took a courageous and principled stand to recess the Constitutional Convention and effectively kill the discriminatory amendment, it is increasingly likely that legislators will need to show up and take final action on the last day of the legislative session -- January 2nd. We need to demonstrate our strong support for marriage equality!
Earlier this year, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that a 1913 law used to stop same-sex couples from outside Massachusetts marrying here could be applied only if a couple's home state expressly forbids same-sex marriage. While most states do expressly forbid same-sex couples from marrying, Judge Connolly ruled today that nothing in Rhode Island law "explicitly deems void or otherwise expressly forbids same-sex marriage." With this ruling, Rhode Island couples can now marry in Massachusetts.
This decision is significant as it means that same-sex couples from TWO states can legally marry.
We extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to the hardworking team of attorneys at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) and to the plaintiffs in this case, Wendy Becker and Mary Norton of Providence.

May 16, 2006

CHICAGO, IL - George is best known for his portrayal of Mr. Sulu on the classic television series, Star Trek and in six subsequent Star Trek films. He made international headlines when he came out to the public last Fall. This Spring, he embarked on a national speaking tour as a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Coming Out Project during which he shared his story and encouraged others to talk about their lives as well.

George has more than 30 feature films and hundreds of television guest-starring roles to his credit. Recognized worldwide as a member of the original Star Trek cast, he received a star on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame in 1986.

George's distinctive voice is featured in Walt Disney Pictures' full-length animated features Mulan and Mulan II, Star Trek audio novel recordings, Fox Television's The Simpsons, Futurama, and in numerous voice-overs and narrations. Earlier this year he appeared as announcer and on-air personality on the debut week of the Howard Stern Show on Sirius Satellite Radio. Recently, he had a starring role in a Los Angeles production of Equus, as well as an appearance on the final season of NBC's Will and Grace.

A community activist, George is a member of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) which works for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. He also serves as chair of the council of governors of East West Players, the nation's foremost Asian Pacific American theater. He is chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of the Japanese American National Museum and a past member of the advisory committee of the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program.

As told in his autobiography, To the Stars, published by Pocket Books in 1994, George was born in Los Angeles, California. With the outbreak of World War II, he and his family together with 120,000 other Japanese Americans were placed behing barbed-wire enclosures of United States internment camps for several years. His family eventually returned to his native Los Angeles, which shaped his acting career.

As part of his Human Rights Campaign (HRC) tour, he discusses his life as a gay Japanese-American. He speaks about the fact that he is taking a stand against anti-gay bigotry. He talks about how diversity is a strength of this country and that there has got to be a recognition of people with different orientations.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

His HRC duties have sometimes included 14 hour days at multiple appearances around the country meeting and greeting GLBT'S (gays) and allies. (Part of the audience often includes Star Trek fans of all ages).

Over the years, to keep fit, George has been an avid runner. He has been involved in a Los Angeles based GLBT running group.

Always a political activist, George ran for the Los Angeles City Council in 1973, losing by a small percentage. He was appointed by Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley to the board of directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District, serving from 1973 to 1984. He also served as vice president of the American Public Transit Association.

George (and his life partner of 19 years, Brad Altman) are residents of Los Angeles, and will be riding in a front vehicle in this year's parade.

PRIDEChicago is also reminding potential parade entries, that the registration cut-off date is June 10, or until all 250 allocated positions are filled, whichever comes first.

The 37th Annual Pride Parade steps off at Belmont and Halsted on Sunday June 25, 2006 at 12 Noon.

George Takei STARDATE 04.20.1947
Portrays Sulu

George Takei played Hikaru Sulu, the helm officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise on the original Star Trek series.
Takei was born in the Boyle Heights district of Los Angeles. He and his family lived there until World War II when, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, they were relocated to a detention camp in Arkansas. From there, they were again moved to another camp at Tule Lake in Northern California.

Takei went to college with thoughts of being an architect, but soon changed his major to Theater Arts. He graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a minor in Latin American Studies.

Takei made his acting debut in a "Playhouse 90" production when he was attending UCLA. While he was taking classes, Takei also trained at the Desilu Workshop.

After a biking trip across Europe, George returned to California and began guest starring on series such as Perry Mason, Mr. Novak, Hawaiian Eye, I, Spy, It Takes a Thief and My Three Sons. Takei appearred in one Twilight Zone episode ("The Encounter"). It was aired once, but due to its controversial content regarding a Japanese traitor in WW II, it has never been shown again.

Takei first began his Star Trek adventure with "Where No Man Has Gone Before," which was the second pilot that finally sold the series. In that episode he was said to be a mathematician. Once the series went into weekly production, he became the helmsman and a part of the bridge crew. During the first season of Star Trek, Takei managed to make a guest appearance on Mission: Impossible, and, during the show's second season, took time off to film "The Green Berets" with John Wayne.

Takei's film debut was in "Ice Palace" with Richard Burton. It was a role that required a lot of make-up, as he was seen in various times throughout his life. After Star Trek was canceled, Takei did guest stints on many primetime series, including Kung Fu, The Six Million Dollar Man, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Miami Vice and a dual role on the long-running series Hawaii Five-O.

In 1972, Takei was a California representative in the Democratic National Convention, and in the fall of 1973, he ran for Mayor of Los Angeles. He didn't win the election, but it did cause a local station to stop running Star Trek and the Star Trek animated series until after the votes were cast. Takei's competition felt that his voice and image on television every week created an unfair advantage for Takei.

In the '80s, Takei hosted an informational series for television called Expression East/West, which dealt with issues involving human relationships. Takei co-wrote (with Robert Asprin) the science fiction novel "Mirror Friend, Mirror Foe." In 1994 he penned his memoirs in "To the Stars."

In 2005 Takei created a media sensation when he came out to the press for the first time as a gay man, and revealed publicly that he has been in a committed relationship with his partner, Brad Altman, since 1987. Takei subsequently became a spokesman for the Human Right Campaign, championing legalized gay marriage and other issues of equality on behalf of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. At the same time, he freely made fun of himself and his newfound notoriety through guest spots on numerous TV shows such as Will & Grace.

Takei also surprised the world when his familiar baritone became the official "voice" of the new Howard Stern Show that premiered on Sirius Satellite Radio in January 2006.
Star Trek's Mr. Sulu Backs Gay Activists
1 hour, 23 minutes ago
Mr. Sulu beamed down to lend support to student gay activists who tried to visit a private Christian university.
George Takei, who played the helmsman in three "Star Trek" TV seasons and six movies, made a surprise appearance Monday after a busload of Soulforce Equality Riders tried to talk about faith and gay rights with students at North Central University in downtown Minneapolis.
The 33 activists are traveling by bus to 19 U.S. colleges with religion-based policies opposed to homosexuality. They were locked out of school buildings when they arrived at North Central, which is owned and operated by the Assemblies of God.
After sitting in front of the doors for most of the afternoon, the Soulforce riders and supporters rallied at a park across the street when Takei, who came out as a homosexual last year, stopped by.
The 68-year-old actor said the activists' "equality trek" shares themes with those of the starship Enterprise.
"They have shown courage and character in showing that most people of faith are not extreme reactionaries who oppose equal rights," he said.
Tour organizer Jacob Reitan, 24, said the colleges they are visiting "equate homosexuality with sickness and sin. It's time to have a conversation instead of defaming our humanity."
Nate Ruch, executive director of university relations at North Central, said last week that the riders declined an offer to have a third party mediate a discussion.
Takei was in town to speak at a gay pride event at the University of Minnesota.
EMERGENCY PROTEST
AGAINST RIGHT WING CHRISTIAN AGENDA

FRIDAY, MARCH 24
2:30 PM - 4:0O PM
SAN FRANCISCO CITY HALL

Once again, out of town right wing extremist Chrisitans are coming to San Francisco. They are having a youth “battlecry” Friday and Saturday at SBC/AT&T Park, but as their “warm up” they are staging a rally on the steps of OUR City Hall.

Who are they? Check out http://www.battlecry.com/

They believe in ongoing wars against Muslim countries, recruiting our youth as “Christian soldiers.” They want to enact laws that are antiwoman, antichoice, antisex, and anti-gay.

STAND WITH US TO TELL THEM
TO GO AWAY—
WE DON’T WANT THEIR THEOCRACY!
